Reclaimed Barnwood

Reclaimed wood has been taken from long-standing idle buildings and refinished for new purposes. Our reclaimed flooring and decking has been rescued from old buildings, barns, piers and other structures. Many of our products come from century-old factories built during the Industrial Revolution using 300 to 400 year old wood and fascinating historical structures in other countries. By reclaiming the wood, Design Hardwood Flooring not only creates beautiful flooring, but we also help preserve historically significant artifacts that would have otherwise been destroyed.

Recycling and remilling aged wooden floors allows us to help preserve our beautiful forests, our beautiful Earth. This antique wood is salvaged from century old buildings allowing us to play a role in preserving our beautiful forests.

Passed down to us from an epoch when virgin forests reigned over our earth, it is denser, stronger and heavier than any lumber we have known in our lifetime; it is, pound for pound, stronger than steel. The paradox of this is that not only are aged wooden floors most beautiful, but their use is beneficial to mankind.

Each floor is unique, imbued by time with beauty like no other in the world.

Why buy aged wood rather than new wood?

As wood ages, its color deepens and becomes increasingly beautiful. Also, the cellular structure of the wood becomes clear and luminous as air slowly dries the layered cells of the wood, creating a translucence, so that when the wood is finished, light seems to be emanating deep from within.

Aged wood is virgin growth, from the original forests that once covered the world. Trees matured slowly in the virgin forests, attaining an age of 500 years old in some areas. The wood is fine grained, hard as a rock, and stronger than any wood available today. For example, Antique Pine is nothing like pine milled today. It is stronger than new Oak and, pound for pound, stronger than steel. Antique Oak is so hard that sparks can fly when it is cut.

Our beautiful old growth forests are diminishing rapidly throughout the world. It would be an inestimable tragedy to our Earth if we were to lose the last ancient forests forever. In this generation we are in a unique, pivotal position and can exert our influence by specifying which wood is to be used. Approximately 50 trees are used to make a floor of 2000 square feet. By using wood reclaimed rom buildings that can no longer be restored, we preserve our last living old growth forests. This, perhaps, is the greatest contribution of aged wood.

The paradox is that now only is aged wood the most beautiful of all, but its use benefits our planet Earth.
