Many of our products come from century-old factories built during the Industrial Revolution using 300 to 400 year old wood and fascinating historical structures in other countries. By reclaiming the wood, Design Hardwood Flooring not only creates beautiful flooring, but we also help preserve historically significant artifacts that would have otherwise been destroyed.

French Oak Antique

 

Antique French Oak has aged for 100 years or more in the form of barns, farm houses, factories, warehouses, mills, in France. Over the decades, the wind, rain, snow, sun and other elements have done their part to engrave into the wood, develop a deep patina, form hair line cracks, insect scars, and other signs of distress.

Our American Antique wood is salvaged from century old buildings allowing us to play a role in protecting our environment. . We believe that if a building must be removed from a site, it is better to reclaim the wood and make something new from it, rather than destroying or discarding the wood in a landfill.

Barn Frames

 

 As wood ages, its color deepens and becomes increasingly beautiful. Also, the cellular structure of the wood becomes clear and luminous as air slowly dries the layered cells of the wood, creating a translucence, so that when the wood is finished, light seems to be emanating deep from within.

Our beautiful old growth forests are diminishing rapidly throughout the world. It would be an inestimable tragedy to our Earth if we were to lose the last ancient forests forever. In this generation we are in a unique, pivotal position and can exert our influence by specifying which wood is to be used. Approximately 50 trees are used to make a floor of 2000 square feet. By using wood reclaimed from buildings that can no longer be restored, we preserve our last living old growth forests. This, perhaps, is the greatest contribution of aged wood.

Sinker Pine

The recovery and processing of this virgin growth timber is sustainable forestry at its best. Each sinker log is reclaimed one or two at a time from the bottom of rivers and swamps in the Southern United States. Here they have been beautifully preserved from the original harvest which occurred up to two hundred years ago.

Old Growth

Old Growth or Aged Wood is milled from stock of 40 year old boards stored in a farmer's barn or milled from fine grained old logs. Over the decades these trees undergo natural weathering, such as drought, excessive rain, heat waves and cold spells through each passing seasons. When repurposed for hardwood flooring, old-growth wood offers an authentic, exceptionally tight grain only found in virgin timber – a look that cannot be duplicated in new materials. Pound for pound Old Growth is stronger than steel.

Antique Peroba

Our Antique Reclaimed Brazilian Peroba is an extraordinary product. This species of tree is protected in various South American countries, but our Peroba is Eco-Friendly as it contains 100% salvaged/recycled content.

Our Antique Peroba stock comes primarily out of 100-200 year old barns and factories throughout the Brazilian countryside. These barn boards are then kiln-dried and milled here in the United States for the utmost in quality control.

The sapwood of peroba is white to yellowish, while the heartwood is light olive colored with a red tinting. The species has an interlocked grain, is fairly lusterous, and is fine in texture
